Dilemma! Can I #write in more than one #genre?

I feel like smashing my head against the drywall. I’m trying to establish myself as an author, I have lots of ideas for short stories and novels. I have written many, many stories in both the horror and thriller genre.

However, book publishing world dictates that you should only write in one genre until you’re established enough to jump between them.

But, I want to write menacing horror stories, chilling ghost stories and teeth gritting thriller stories and publish them to my readership as me, not as me and two other aliases or pen names.

Every blog and article on the subject says: No! Stick to one genre, and if your are going to hop between, you must use a pen name and write in disguise.

Surely this only applies to those who wish to flip from horror to erotica and from suspense to rom com?

Please tell me your thoughts and beliefs, I would love to know!

  1. Do what you feel you should do. Every one has an opinion. If you want to hit more than one genre go for it. Pave your path.

  2. Ali, there are as many opinions as there are genre and sub-genre 😃
    My advice?
Write whatever YOU want to write and publish your short stories in whatever genre applies.
Just because you write in multi-genre does NOT mean you’re a bad writer – it means you are a spherical thinker capable of more than one train of thought 😃
Ignore the Genre-Nazis and go do what YOU ENJOY 👍🎉🐵

    1. Great advice from the Ape who reads. Thanks, Chris. It seems to be a very convoluted subject when it comes to genre. There are literally hundreds of articles on the subject and it’s like treading through treacle trying to decide if it’s a good idea, bad idea.

      1. The best answer is usually the simplest Ally – Throw away all the opinions and do YOUR thing LOLOL

      2. Yes, you’re right. In the early stages, why close yourself into a box right away? Thanks so much for the reply and advice.

  3. It’s probably good advice, but I didn’t heed it. I call my genre speculative fiction, but I’ve written science fiction, fantasy, and paranormal under that banner. I should note that it isn’t making me rich…yet.

  4. I have no idea, but I guess the publishing world knows the business, so maybe , it’s a good advice.
